Stage Performers

Nuclia Waste, the triple nipple drag queen of comedy, has been delighting audiences in Colorado and throughout the country with her wacky stand-up comedy wit and rule breaking fashion sense. From comedy shows to charity fund-raisers, the Princess of Plutonium radiates her joy and belief that you should never take life too seriously. She is the most original entertainer to ever emerge from the uranium contaminated swamps of Rocky Flats, Colorado. Having three breasts has not hurt her career, either. Oh, the joys and benefits of nuclear radiation!

Nuclia has raised thousands of dollars for charities since she donned her big green wig in 1999. From Tupperware parties to the Howard Dental Center Bingo Ball, this “cherub of Chernobyl” gives from her plutonium heart in so many ways. Beneficiaries have included Project Angel Heart, the Mi Casa Resource Center for Women, The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Colorado AIDS Project.

Nuclia’s motto in life is “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.” With this in mind, she glows forth into the world putting laughs and smiles onto the faces of everyone she meets. From her comedy performances on stage to her amazingly creative costumes, she encompasses all the fun and joy of her inner child. If she makes one person laugh each day, she has done her job.

Aimee Herman, a performance poet, has been featured on radio, at various festivals, café’s, and erotic salons. She currently works as sections editor of erotica for Oysters & Chocolate and as a Professor. Her poetry has been featured in various anthologies and magazines such as Cliterature Journal, Pregnant Moon Review, and the upcoming anthology by Uphook Press. She has been featured in Oysters & Chocolate Erotic Stories of Every Flavor, Best Lesbian Love Stories 2010 (Alyson Books), and the upcoming Best Women’s Erotica (Cleis Press). She is inspired by Canadians and disemboweling the meaning of sexuality.

Something About Lulu

Bylo Farmer from the Midwest, Patty Jackson from the Northeast, and Angie Holley from the South converged on Colorado and met in Resonance, Women’s Chorus of Boulder. The three realized that their varied musical styles and sense of humor made for a surprising and magical blend. With their stunning guitar work, Patty and Bylo are clearly musical twins separated at birth, while Angie and her smokey alto bring blues and jazz into the mix.

Whether singing tender ballads, bawdy blues or telling a story about cowgirls on the trail, Somethin’ About Lulu says it best with mellifluous three-part harmony and delicious guitar licks.

Bylo picked up her dad’s ukulele at age 8 and began picking out melodies. It wasn’t long before she was begging her mom to get her Chet Atkins records. Her early influences were opera, rock n’ roll, and country music. A versatile player, Bylo can make her guitar sing with her lightning fast finger picking and soulfully felt interpretations.

Angie comes from a long line of musical southern women, so it’s no surprise that she was humming to the radio before she could talk. Her 35 years of performing have included singing celtic folk tunes, swing, rock n’ roll and down & dirty blues from Florida to New York to Colorado. Angie has performed with the John Hines Band (and is featured on his CD, In The Pocket), Primetime, and Flatirons Jazz with Kurt Ehrenmann. Her saucy, sultry vocals have been described as a B flat clarinet crooning its deep, velvety timbre.

Patty is a singer/songwriter who moved to CO from NY to get involved with the rich and thriving acoustic music scene in the Front Range. For the past 25 years, she has played in numerous all-female bands from rock to country to contemporary folk, and performed as a solo act throughout NY, New England and Colorado (including playing for Hillary Clinton when she was running for NY Senator). Her original songs have heartfelt "slice of life" lyrics, coupled with killer guitar licks and a voice like an angel.

Somethin' About Lulu is currently in the studio working on their first full-length CD to be released in June of 2009!

Cynova - a little torch, a little twang

From the moment they started singing together members CJ Smith and Nora-Ellen Long knew they had something special. The combination of the two voices creates a sultry tension that is dynamic and vibrant, at times blending into one sound so completely that it is impossible to tell them apart.

A native of Georgia, CJ learned to walk to the Beatles but was also saturated with the country sounds of rural radio. Later she found inspiration in the likes of Dan Fogelberg, the Eagles, the Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge, and Dar Williams. Like a hint of vanilla in your latte, these influences provide a sweet background to her original work.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Nora-Ellen has been a singer all her life. Her early musical influences were the folk and acid rock groups of the 60’s and the harmony rich groups like Poco, the Byrds, Jesse Colin Young. This vast background is put to good use in the exploration of creativity that shines through in the vocal arrangements.

Chasing Jenny is a potent line up of dynamic presence and musical talent that blends driving lyrics and musical ‘edge’ in their unique style. There is an emotionality woven into their music that encompasses rock, folk, blues and funk. Their shows have been described as ‘alive and sexy’ as they stir the lines of the singer/songwriter genre. Watch for the upcoming release of their debut album.

-Linee’s vocals have been described as a blend of Melissa Etheridge & Billie Holiday. She has been performing for over 20 yrs. in venues such as The Iron Horse & Catch a Rising Star in NYC. She has 2 Cds: "Brown Out" and "Hard Questions"

-Sherri’s playing has been compared to Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tony Levin of Peter Gabriel’s band. She has played in venues up and down the west coast including LA and San Francisco Gay Pride.

-Jacq has been playing drums for over 20 years from senior member of ICM action drumming ensemble to the Dave Stringer band. She has toured internationally and recorded 2 original Cds.

-Jessie’s violin lines are electrifying and lyrical. She is a master at creating layers both melodically and visually.

Dhillon Khosla

Dhillon Khosla, Acclaimed Author of Both Sides Now: One Man's Journey through Womanhood

Dhillon Khosla, former federal staff attorney and author of the critically acclaimed memoir "Both Sides Now: One Man's Journey through Womanhood," will share his moving personal story during an evening lecture in downtown Boulder on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 7pm. A renowned lecturer and advocate for True Tolerance, Khosla is an expert on discussing gender relations from a spiritual, as opposed to political, perspective.
Born in a female body, Dhillon went through an extraordinary journey through five years and fifteen surgeries to affirm his true male identity and become the complete and integrated man he is today. His open willingness to share how his journey forced him to confront his own shadows of intolerance will resonate with the great many, who are tired of one-sided politics and ready for a deeper and more profound conversation.

The evening lecture is a collaborative community event and is proudly co-sponsored by several lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) and allied organizations including Naropa University, Boulder Pride, Boulder Parents, Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), University of Colorado Boulder LGBTQQI Resource Center and Word is Out bookstore.

The event will begin with at 7 p.m. Mr. Khosla will share his personal story and then take questions from audience members. Location of the event is the Boulder Shambhala Meditation Center located at 1345 Spruce Street. The event is on the second floor and is wheelchair accessible. Free parking is available on the street and at the County Courthouse across the street. Admission is free for students with a valid ID and paid admission is a $5-$10 sliding scale cash donation. Copies of Mr. Khosla’s new acclaimed book “Both Sides Now” will be on sale at the event.

6) Community March Against Hate
At 3AM Wednesday morning, a young woman who is a student at Naropa University was attacked and severely beaten because she is a lesbian.  The Boulder police are investigating the attack as a possible hate-crime, but Boulder Pride is working closely with the victim, and we know and she knows she was targeted for violence because she told the men that she was gay.

An incidence of anti-gay violence threatens the sense of safety of the entire LGBTQ community by contributing to an increased awareness of vulnerability.  It's very important to recognize hate-motivated violence as a hate-crime to ensure accountability and to validate and individual victim and an entire community's concern about the possibility of future attacks.

Boulder Pride is committed to confronting hate within our community.  The organization will be holding a community march commencing at 5:00pm on Friday, February 23, at the Boulder Pride Community Center, located at 2132 14th Street, Boulder, CO  80302, and continuing to 13th Street and Canyon Boulevard - the site of the assault.  The march will end with a rally at the City of Boulder Building at Canyon Boulevard and Broadway.

Speakers for the March and Rally will be:

  • Sonya Lewis, Boulder Pride, Board President
  • Blake Weber, Boulder Pride, Executive Director
  • Robin Bohannan, Boulder City Council
  • A Representative from Naropa University
  • Veronica Garcia, Colorado Anti-Violence Project, Executive Director
  • Jean Hodges, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)
  • Betty Ball, Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice
  • Bill Cohen, Anti-Defamation League
  • Ray Stewart, Human Relations Commission
  • Dedre Godninez, BCU
