Learn more about Colorado's ENDA

There is now a Colorado law that creates workplace equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals? The passage of Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA) in May 2007 is an excellent step forward in ensuring workplace equality for every person in the state of Colorado. The law makes it illegal to take sexual orientation or gender identity into consideration when making employment decisions. Help us spread the word, download this policy statement for your place of business and pass it on to your Human Resources manager. You can also print copies of this informational brochure and share it with others.  Learn more about Colorado's ENDA at the Gill Foundation website.

Call for Submissions for SOs, family and friends of transgender and/or gender variant individuals

SOFFA ANTHOLOGY

Mission Statement: to produce an edited volume of the "think-alouds" of significant others, family members, friends, and allies (SOFFAs) on their relationships with transgender and/or gender variant individuals and to provide a resource for the transgender community and their SOFFAs.

We are now seeking submissions for an edited volume on reflective experiences of significant others, family members, friends and allies (SOFFAs) of transgender and/or gender variant individuals. This anthology is designed to be a resource for transgender and/or gender variant communities while serving to reach and support SOFFAs as they watch a loved one transition or journey through gender non-conformity. We are also interested in individuals who have entered into a relationship with a transgender person who is post transition. This volume seeks to offer quality "think-alouds" on the relationships between transgender and/or gender variants and their loved ones, with the philosophy that there is no single right answer to how a SOFFA should feel or process their emotions, identifies or feelings. This anthology is designed to be a positive resource for the transgender and/or gender variant community and their SOFFAs. We encourage the submissions to be respectful, but also for SOFFAs to document their pain, frustration, confusion and identity struggles or lack there of.  The transition or gender non-conformity journey of a loved one often generates an individual journey for SOFFAs that has yet to be documented. This process may be extremely difficult or wonderfully beautiful, we would like representation of both.

We are interested in narratives and stories of personal reflection, transformation, identity challenge and overall development regarding the connection to a transgender and/or gender variant person(s). Significant others, family members, friends, allies (SOFFAs), children, co-workers, teachers, and medical professionals of transgender and/or gender variant individuals are encouraged to submit pieces. We are looking for thoughtful and authentic responses/personal narratives/stories (1,200-4,000 words).

Submissions must be received by July 1, 2008. Further questions should be addressed to asoffa@gmail.com.

Download submission request.

Burns-Schroeder Marriage Equality Trial

When: Tuesday, May 6th, 8:30 a.m. (or come anytime during the process)

Where: Denver City and County Building, 1437 Bannock Street, in Courtroom 117M

Background: Kate Burns and Sheila Schroeder are the same-gender Soulforce couple who entered the Marriage License Office in Denver on September 24, 2007 with Rev. Mike Morran to request a marriage license. After being denied, Burns and Schroeder began a sit-in with numerous supporters (many from Soulforce!) to protest the unjust laws that exclude same-gender couples from civil marriage. The couple was arrested for trespassing when the office closed at 5:00 p.m.

Anyone who would like to attend the trial in silent support is most welcome. We will have rainbow-colored armbands available. At our last court appearance, the prosecuting attorneys tried to prevent our supporters from wearing the armbands. Our lawyers rigorously defended our right to free speech. We would love for the courtroom to be packed with people wearing rainbow armbands to show how many of us want equality and justice!

For those who plan to attend the trial proceedings: our lawyers suggest that you plan to arrive around 9:00 or 9:30 a.m. if you want to see the jury selection. There will be other cases that the judge will hear before ours, so things likely won't start for us until around 9:00. If you are most interested in the arguments, you may want to come in the afternoon after jury selection. Please understand, however, that predicting the exact course of the trial is impossible.

We also plan to have a celebration at the conclusion of the trial at the Cap City Tavern, a block from the courthouse at 1247 Bannock Street. Everyone is invited. (The time of the party will depend on the length of the proceedings.)

This marriage equality direct action is one action in the ongoing "Focus on the Facts" campaign, a nonviolent effort launched by Soulforce at the beginning of 2007. Focus on the Facts seeks to end political- and religion-based oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Coloradans. To learn more, visit www.soulforce.org/article/1185.

Online Survey for GLBTQ College students

Kristi Young is exploring mate selection and how individuals choose partners in her thesis at New Mexico State University. She is looking for anyone over the age of 18 and enrolled in college classes (i.e. part-time or full-time, during the summer or only during the regular school year). To explore these issues, she has posted a survey online, with the hopes of gathering information from heterosexual and homosexual college students.  She will then perform data analyses on this data to check for similarities and differences across the two groups.

If you know of any students who may be interested in contributing, please pass along this link. The survey has received IRB approval through NMSU. It takes about

15 minutes to complete and responses are completely anonymous.

If you have any specific questions, contact Kristi Young the lead investigator of this study at khargisy@nmsu.edu or via the Dept. of Family and Consumer Sciences at 575-646-3936.

Race in America Book Club

When: Thursday, June 5th from 5:30 - 8:00 pm

Where: at the YWCA of Boulder County (14th and Mapleton in Boulder)

Join us to watch and discuss the documentary "Boys of Baraka"

"The "Boys of Baraka" reveals the human face of a tragic statistic — 61 percent of Baltimore's African-American boys fail to graduate from high school; 50 percent of them go on to jail. The four young boys featured in "The Boys of Baraka," despite individual talents and considerable personal charms, cannot escape the common fate expressed by those options. But fate, as documented in this film, comes to them with a remarkable and fickle twist — an experimental boarding school in rural Kenya. This deeply moving 84-minute documentary from filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady follows four 12- and 13-year-old Baltimore boys — all from troubled, broken homes — as they undergo the selection process, attend a summer orientation course, then finally take off for Africa. Shot over the course of three years and told primarily through the voices of the boys themselves, the film is at once warmly funny and very moving, showing not only the effects of poverty and urban neglect, but how much difference a little bit of attention can make in the lives of so-called "at risk" children."

RSVP: to jennifer@ywcaboulder.org if you are planning to attend this session. Food and drinks will be provided.

Vox Feminista - STRANGE CAGES: THE HUMAN ZOO
Prisons. War zones . Zoos. Pornography. Ghettos. Dams. Barbed wire.
The spectacle of our culture's cages surrounds us. And the not-so-obvious cages: Obedience. Traffic jams. Convenience. Dead-end jobs. Debt. Ignorance. Pollution. Consumerism. Denial. And the voluntary cages: Megatechnology Addiction. Gated communities. Surveillance. Science. Isolation. Empire. Cages of habits and habitats. What if your mind's in a cage, and you don’t know you’re in a cage? Is it still a cage? Cages through the ages. It’s time to engage the cages. To disengage, to love and rage in the maze of cages. We know it’s wrong, but we don’t speak up. Well, the silence ends here. It’s time for a jailbreak. Open the gates!

Join Vox Feminista as we work to illuminate and subvert the spectacle of the cages. Beyond our lifestyle of sealed boundaries and unattainable desires, in the land of the key and the home of the cage, check out what liberation could look like for all the unfinished animals. Beyond the boxes we’re asking the question: who let the humans out?

Our new spring show busts us out of the cages of technology, gender, prison, war, revolution, silence, and the spectacle surrounding our lives.

Inaugural Rocky Mountain Open Tennis Tournament

Sanctioned by the Gay Lesbian Tennis Association.

When: June 7-9, 2008

Where: Gates Tennis Center, 100 South Adams Street, Denver

Festivities begin with a draw party to be held June 6, continue with tennis matches scheduled for June 7 and 8, includes a closing night banquet on the 8th, and concludes with final matches and awarding of tournament trophies on June 9. Ours is the only GLTA sanctioned tournament in Colorado and the entire Rocky Mountain region. As you may know the GLTA is the international organization that manages and sanctions the gay tennis circuit around the world. There are 41 gay and lesbian tennis clubs around the world that comprise the GLTA. An estimated 5,500 players will take part in GLTA tournaments over the next year, and the number of tournaments and players grows each year. More information on the GLTA can be found at: www.glta.net

Registrations for the tournament are taken from literally around the world on a first come first serve basis. Our competition is limited to 150 players, both men and women, entering in Open – D level divisions. We anticipate quickly filling the 150 slots available for play – and want to make sure that as many people from our local tennis club and surrounding communities are able to take part as possible.
