Personal Safety Skills for Women
Personal safety skills for women are provided in classes offered by the nonprofit Rape Assistance and Awareness Program (RAAP) in Denver. RAAP notes that one in five women will be sexually victimized in their lifetime, yet assaults are avoided 85 percent of the time when women resist. Through discussions and role-play activities, participants learn how to convey boundaries and awareness as well as effective physical, verbal and psychological techniques to fend off an attack.
The next classes will be:
May 10 and 17, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Rude Recreation Center, 2855 West Holden Place near Invesco Stadium in Denver.

The walk will end at the AIDS Memorial Garden located on the south side of Arapahoe and 13th (one block east of Broadway on Arapahoe). Music will be sung at the vigil and the names of those we’ve lost to AIDS will be read aloud at the AIDS Memorial Garden. The Boulder County Interfaith AIDS Coalition has spiritually supported BCAP's clients for over a decade. Through donations and benefit concerts the Coalition is also a vital supporter of BCAP's food bank. This service to BCAP’s clients is essential to their well-being. Race in America Book Club
When: Thursday, June 5th from 5:30 - 8:00 pm
Where: at the YWCA of Boulder County (14th and Mapleton in Boulder)
Join us to watch and discuss the documentary "Boys of Baraka"
"The "Boys of Baraka" reveals the human face of a tragic statistic — 61 percent of Baltimore's African-American boys fail to graduate from high school; 50 percent of them go on to jail. The four young boys featured in "The Boys of Baraka," despite individual talents and considerable personal charms, cannot escape the common fate expressed by those options. But fate, as documented in this film, comes to them with a remarkable and fickle twist — an experimental boarding school in rural Kenya. This deeply moving 84-minute documentary from filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady follows four 12- and 13-year-old Baltimore boys — all from troubled, broken homes — as they undergo the selection process, attend a summer orientation course, then finally take off for Africa. Shot over the course of three years and told primarily through the voices of the boys themselves, the film is at once warmly funny and very moving, showing not only the effects of poverty and urban neglect, but how much difference a little bit of attention can make in the lives of so-called "at risk" children."
RSVP: to jennifer@ywcaboulder.org if you are planning to attend this session. Food and drinks will be provided.

Moondance 2008 will be held in Boulder, Colorado, the original home of Moondance since the first festival in 2000. Those 2 years when the festival was held in L.A./Hollywood (2006/2007) were quite successful, but Boulder really has the right ambience for Moondance and Moondancers, so we'll be returning home to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains!

| Vox Feminista - STRANGE CAGES: THE HUMAN ZOO |
 |
Prisons. War zones . Zoos. Pornography. Ghettos. Dams. Barbed wire.
The spectacle of our culture's cages surrounds us. And the not-so-obvious cages: Obedience. Traffic jams. Convenience. Dead-end jobs. Debt. Ignorance. Pollution. Consumerism. Denial. And the voluntary cages: Megatechnology Addiction. Gated communities. Surveillance. Science. Isolation. Empire. Cages of habits and habitats. What if your mind's in a cage, and you don’t know you’re in a cage? Is it still a cage? Cages through the ages. It’s time to engage the cages. To disengage, to love and rage in the maze of cages. We know it’s wrong, but we don’t speak up. Well, the silence ends here. It’s time for a jailbreak. Open the gates!
Join Vox Feminista as we work to illuminate and subvert the spectacle of the cages. Beyond our lifestyle of sealed boundaries and unattainable desires, in the land of the key and the home of the cage, check out what liberation could look like for all the unfinished animals. Beyond the boxes we’re asking the question: who let the humans out?
Our new spring show busts us out of the cages of technology, gender,
prison, war, revolution, silence, and the spectacle surrounding our lives.
