Sacred Heart of Jesus School Denies Enrollment of Lesbians' Child

Protest at the Office of the Archdiocese

Students from the Iliff School of Theology will be holding a protest in front of the offices of the Archdiocese of Denver on Tuesday March 9th from 9:30am-Noon. The offices are located at, 1300 South Steele Street Denver, CO 80210.

This is a continued response to the decision to remove a pre-school child from the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School because of the sexual-orientation of the child’s parents. We would invite all who are willing to be respectful to join us in this demonstration of peace and justice.

Click here for some things that you can do to help the community.

About:

Both Channel 9News and the Daily Camera have reported that "Boulder's Sacred Heart of Jesus School has denied enrollment of lesbians' child."

According to the Daily Camera, the Archdiocese of Denver said the parents disqualified their child from enrollment to preschool by their actions: "Homosexual couples living together as a couple are in disaccord with Catholic teaching."

Boulder Pride extends its support to the family and stands in solidarity with the teachers at Sacred Heart who disagree with the Archdiocese's decision and with members of the community who are concerned that the Archdiocese has ignored the fullness of Catholic understanding of welcome and love, and instead is using a child to make a political point and not a theological one. All schools, private and public, should provide safe, welcoming learning environments to all students. A child should never be singled out to make a political statement.

Many community members have contacted Boulder Pride, asking for us to organize a protest at the school. Boulder Pride does not endorse a protest at a preschool, as it could be upsetting to young children who may not understand.

However, we do understand that many community members are upset. To create an opportunity for discussion, Boulder Pride will be hosting a community forum tonight (Friday, March 5) at the Wesley Chapel Church (1290 Folsom Street, Boulder; wesleyf.org) from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. The purpose of the Forum is to provide concerned communities a chance to gather.

Also, Boulder Pride encourages concerned community members to contact the Sacred Heart of Jesus School:
1318 Mapleton Ave
Boulder, CO 80304
(303) 443-0684
bartschm@shjboulder.org

and the Archdiocese of Denver:
1300 South Steele Street
Denver, CO 80210

info@archden.org

Additionally, Boulder Pride encourages concerned community members to send Letters to Editor to the Boulder Daily Camera: openforum@dailycamera.com.

The vision of Boulder Pride is that Boulder County serve as a model of equality, respect, and well-being for LGBTQ people. To achieve our vision, our mission is to foster safe environments for self-expression, gathering, support, and dialogue; advocate for social justice; collaborate with others who share our vision; celebrate the contributions of the many facets of our community; and educate the public about the experiences of LGBTQ people.

Boulder Valley Safe Schools Coalition Survey

The Boulder Valley Safe Schools Coalition (BVSSC) has been working for over a decade to make Boulder Valley schools safe and welcoming for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and questioning (LGBTIQ) students, faculty, staff, and parents. During that time, the place of LGBTIQ people in the society has changed, and the schools have come a long way in becoming more supportive and affirming. Against this background, BVSSC has decided to engage in a process of self-assessment, trying to understand what various people who are affected by our work want and need for us to be doing. To begin this self-assessment, we would like BVSD students, parents, faculty/staff/administrators to share their ideas with us. If you are involved with Boulder Valley Schools, we invite you to take 10 minutes to complete our survey at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey-intro.zgi?p=WEB229TA9KWV4G.

LGBTQ Women and Cancer

Greetings!

Ashley Mills, Genetic Counseling student at Mount Sinai in New York is conducting a research study survey which aims to understand cancer beliefs and attitudes, in addition to family history communication in the LGBTQ community. It is a ONE TIME anonymous survey and takes 15-20 minutes to complete.  It requires NO additional participation.

There have been few opportunities to investigate cancer beliefs and attitudes in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) female communities. The purpose of this study is to understand and analyze views on cancer and family communication in sexually diverse female communities.  The intended goal is to use the information analyzed to give health care professionals, such as genetic counselors, greater insight of community beliefs and attitudes in order to better serve and understand their patients who identify as LGBTQ.  Addressing risk assessment, cancer worry and family history are the key components of cancer genetic counseling, with the goals of both addressing patient’s psychological needs and influencing risk-reducing behaviors.  Therefore, such insights could be useful for improving education, cultural competency, communication and appropriate clinical care.

Your participation is much appreciated!  In order to participate, you must be female, over age 18. A diagnosis of cancer is not needed to participate in this survey.

You can find the survey online by simply clicking on the link below:

To all women who love women:

Hello! My name is Erin Doolin, and I am a doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I am interested in exploring how sexual minority women know that their community will be there for them. This study asks that you complete a series of questionnaires regarding your definition of community and how connected you feel to that community. I estimate that the questionnaires will take between 25-35 minutes to complete and they are located online.

extra mile and back, no exceptions. Cis female actor preferred.

XAVIER -‐ Late teens, “hip hop” look. Worked hard to graduate college at an earlier age than most. Person of color of Latino/a descent preferred, trans male or cis female actor preferred.

CANDY -‐ Mid 40s -‐ mid 50s, stereotypically feminine. A late-‐transitioning woman, she finds herself slightly out-‐of-‐place in the youthful support group, but does her best to participate and help. Person of color preferred, trans female or cis female actor preferred.

The Soffa Anthology

because friends and family transition, too

Updates will be available on the website at submissions@soffaanthology.com

The editors of a new anthology call for submissions on the experiences of significant others, family members, friends and allies of transgender and/or gender variant individuals. The feelings, emotional processes and experiences of those in relationships with transgender and/or gender variant individuals are seldom acknowledged. That’s why this anthology is so important as a resource and an educational book. This particular call seeks quality “think-alouds” that are reflections on the experience of being in a relationship with a transgender and/or gender variant loved one.

We are interested in personal narratives, stories and reflections from significant others, family members, friends, allies, co-workers, teachers, medical professionals and clergy who are in relationships with transgender and/or gender variant individuals. Give us your inner dialogues, theories, practices, joys, coming-out stories, challenging moments and transformative events. We are seeking a multiplicity of voices tackling the intersections of relationships and transgender and/or gender variant identities with sexuality, race, religion, spiritual affiliation, socio-economic status, ability, etc.

We are looking for thoughtful and authentic responses of 1,500-6,000 words. Only respectful submissions will be considered; however, we expect pieces to document a range of experiences and emotions including confusion, joy, frustration, pain, happiness, identity struggles, fear, anger, anxiety and love.

Submissions must be sent as Word files with text in 12 point Times New Roman font and should be previously unpublished, 1,500-6,000 words in length and typed double-spaced. You may submit multiple pieces. All submissions must include a 55-65 word biography to appear in the contributors’ notes section if your work is accepted. No previously published or simultaneously submitted material without prior approval.

Please send submissions to submissions@soffaanthology.com.  Include your name, pseudonym if you have one you wish to use, address, phone number, email and bio you would like to appear in the book if your selection is chosen for publication. Put your name and the title of the piece in the subject field of the email.

This anthology is slated to be published by Homofactus Press in 2012. Final contributors will receive a one-time $25.00 payment and one complimentary copy of the final publication. Final contributors may also purchase books at a 40% discount.

The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2010.

The editors and longtime friends, C.T Whitley and Eleanor A. Hubbard, Ph.D. have extensive personal and professional experience with the transgender and/or gender variant community. C.T., who transitioned during his undergraduate career, is currently seeking a graduate degree in sociology.  While working on his undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado, C.T. founded a student support/social group for transgender and gender non-conformers. He has served as a board member for several non-profit organizations advocating for transgender awareness and equality. Utilizing his passion for social awareness and trans issues, he has presented at several national conferences and been published in a collection of anthologies.

Eleanor A. Hubbard, a retired Senior Instructor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has taught about trans and gender variant issues for over 20 years. She was renowned for her courses relating to the intersections of sex, gender, sexuality, race and the media. She is also the Founder and CEO of DiversityWorks, providing training and consulting on diversity issues in the workplace. Eleanor and C.T. joined forces to create this resource as they both recognized a gap in the literature to help significant others, family members, friends and allies come to terms with the transition or gender non-conformity of a loved one.

Create and Send Your Own Superhero

The Colorado Rights Five Superheroes are back and this time they need your help! Earlier this year, the GLBT Community Center of Colorado launched a great statewide public education campaign to bring attention to five laws that protect and enrich the lives of LGBT people in Colorado. The campaign was everywhere from bars to Pridefests to online advertising.  Now, the heroes are back and this time, they want you to tell five or more friends about these important laws.

To help you get the word out, a fun application has been created on the Rights Five website, www.RightsFive.com. It allows you to create and send your own superhero to your friends and family so that they can become informed as well. Check it out. It's fun, it's easy and it's important.

Do it TODAY and share the knowledge about these five laws.

Thanks.

Photo Project on Family

What:  I am a documentary photographer working a project exploring how people define family and the ways that traditional notions of family are challenged.
When/Where/Who:  I am interested in making a multimedia photo story on a same sex couple raising children or a member of the LGBTQ community who has adopted.  I would be shooting multiple times over the course of a few months.  Most of the shooting would take place at the family's home, as I am trying to capture a sense of family dynamics.

Call for Change- Support LGBT inmates

We are writing to ask you to consider becoming a signatory of Just Detention International’s Call for Change initiative, a set of policy recommendations that if implemented, would greatly improve conditions for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) inmates in detention.  Just Detention International (JDI) seeks to end sexual violence in all forms of detention. A recent study of 6 male prisons in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) found that 67% of “non-heterosexual” inmates had endured some form of sexual violence (Jenness, et al., UC Irvine, 2007). Transgender women are especially vulnerable to sexual assault in the male prisons where they are housed. We also find that gay men and lesbian women become targets of discrimination, harassment and violence in a penal system plagued with extreme homophobia.

Include LGBT families in comprehensive immigration reform In the last few weeks, Congress has begun to work on drafting a Comprehensive Immigration Reform (or CIR) bill. This upcoming bill is this year's only opportunity for the LGBT community to get legislation passed that will end the suffering of countless binational LGBT couples and families.

Please call on lawmakers to include LGBT families in comprehensive immigration reform.  Every day, more than 36,000 lesbian and gay binational families are impacted by discriminatory immigration policies.  Families, like those recently featured in The Advocate, are forced to leave the United States or be split apart because U.S. immigration law does not allow lesbian and gay Americans to sponsor their partners and children for residency.  For each of those families, the clock is ticking. These couples face discrimination that denies them some of the rights heterosexual couples can take for granted. Shockingly, immigration law at this point does not recognize any rights gay and lesbian Americans have in sponsoring their partners for permanent legal resident status. This applies even to married gay and lesbian couples, since immigration law by its very nature is federal law, and the federal government (due to the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act) does not recognize marriage unless it is between one man and one woman. This situation has lead to many heartbreaking situations in which gay and lesbian binational couples and families have faced separation due to visa constraints.

Because of this, it is vital that the CIR bills in both houses of Congress include the Uniting American Families Act (or UAFA), which would make it possible for gay, lesbian and transgender American citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their partners in obtaining a lawful permanent resident status, something which heterosexuals can do through marriage.

The CIR bill is currently being drafted for the Senate by Senator Schumer of New York, and for the House by Representative Lofgren of California, please let let your elected officials in Washington know that the bill must include the Uniting American Families Act (or UAFA). You can send your senators and representatives an e-mail by filling out the contact information form on the Centerlink website. Please forward this message to your friends, relatives and constituents and help pass immigration reform that will end a major injustice facing the LGBT community.

For more information on UAFA and immigration issues facing the LGBT community, please visit Immigration Equality.

Do you enjoy wine? Do you want to learn more about wines and wine pairings? A small group of friends have recently formed "Boulder Bacchus," a wine tasting group for the GLBT community. The format is a monthly get-together rotated among host homes. A wine expert will work with a wine selection group to choose themes for each evening and present the wines at the session with brief information about each wine along with suggested food pairings. You do not have to be a wine expert to attend; in fact it is all about learning and having fun and fellowship with wine in a relaxed fun environment. You just need to bring a wine glass and $15 (check or cash) to each wine tasting.

We are pleased to announce our new wine merchant - Sr. Manuel Sanchez owner of the West End Wine Shop in Boulder. Manuel is an expert in wines and pairings; he presents information in an engaging and interesting way making wine presentations understandable and fun to all of us--novices and experienced 'winers'. Unfortunately, Manuel cannot join us for this event as we were not able to book him in time--he plans to be our wine merchant and join us for all future wine tastings.

This month we are hopping around the French wine regions to sample an interesting selection of good French wines paired with Jim's favorite selections. We will start with a surprise wine of Jim Bailey's choice, so be sure to arrive at 7:00PM to not miss this treat. Don't forget to bring your wine glass and $15.00 cash or check!

Below is Manuel's web page, please stop in, say hello to him, and let him know that Bacchus Boulder sent you!
www.westendwineshop.com For more information and to register for future events:   email Boulder Bacchus

or you can go to BOULDERBACCHUS.COM and follow registration instructions.  Once registered you will receive an invitation to each event, you will need to RSVP.  Bring your own wine glass and $15.00 check or cash to each event to cover expenses for wines and light appetizers.

Gay Men’s Relationship Group has openings

We currently have openings in an ongoing gay men’s relationship group led by Robert Unger, Ph.D.  This group was initially sponsored by B.C.A.P., but has been free-standing for about 10 years.  The group focuses on relationship issues particular to gay men, and utilizes material brought in from everyday life as well as issues which arise between group members in the course of the group.  The group is very stable and consists of men dedicated to this work. The group meets weekly on Friday mornings, 7:30-8:55.  Because this group originated at B.C.A.P., the fee is a greatly reduced $20/session. Dr. Unger has been a group therapist for 30 years and a B.C.A.P. volunteer since 1991.  He teaches group dynamics at Naropa University and presents locally and nationally on a variety of aspects of group process.

For Further information please call Dr. Unger at 303-938-9494. Jump Up To Headlines >>

Free Anonymous HIV Testing from BCAP and BCPHBCAP-

BCAP maintains a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Boulder Public Health Department for HIV testing and counseling. BCAP does not provide regular in-house testing hours to the general population, referring these appointments to Boulder Public Health. BCAP prioritizes populations not accessing traditional testing resources, such as a public health department or private physicians, and reaches those most at risk for infection. However, through state funding, BCAP prevention programs Atlas and Hispanos Para la Salud provide free HIV testing to men who have sex with men (MSM) and Latino/Hispanic individuals, respectively. Please use the below contact information to access staff members of those programs.
